Bronze age

Although still a prehistoric period, the bronze age shows a large amount of development and civilisation beginning in about 2300BC. During the late 19th century and early 20th century (1870s to 1930s) the excavation of local archaeology sites became a very popular past-time. Many bronze age burial mounds (or barrows) were discovered during this period and the museum holds many of their finds. These include bronze axe and spear heads, large burial urns and a fragment of woollen cloth believed to have been found in a local barrow that contained a tree trunk coffin burial.
