The Whitfield Project

Project location/site: Embsay Reservoir, near Embsay, North Yorkshire
Type of activity: Survey

The Upper Wharfedale Heritage Group are conducting a non-invasive, archaeological survey of the mill site and the former hamlet during 2010. The aim of the survey is to seek to identify the exact location of the Whitfield Sike Mill buildings and identify the different building phases it went through. The footprint of the cottages will also be identified. The water management systems established to supply the spinning mill is an important element in the survey, which will take us onto the moorland where the old mill ponds can still be seen. The necessary desk based research and a botanical survey of the area are also being conducted.
A full report of the project will be posted on UWHG’s website when the surveys are completed.
