Many important people have been associated with Craven and Skipton over the centuries. The museum has a display dedicated to some of these people and their achievements.
The pioneer Thomas Cresap was born in Skipton but moved to Maryland, USA at the beginning of the 1700s. He went on to found a town on the Potomac River, which he named Skipton. The Cresap Society of America was established in his honour, and represents all of his descendants – the number is currently estimated at around 11,000.
The bookkeeper Thomas Spencer co-founded Marks & Spencer. In 1894 Spencer’s employer suggested he went into partnership with Michael Marks who wanted to set up a company for his penny bazaars.
